After dominating the Legends ranks over the past 14 months, Austin Hill joined a new level of racing as he entered his first ever Late Model event at Dillon Motor Speedway (SC). Trying things out with the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour, Hill made quite an impression by finishing in the fifth position, despite an early gaff when he missed the driver's meeting.
“It’s was really good for us; we only got one qualifying lap because we missed the drivers meeting,” said Hill. “In Legends cars we only have one meeting, so we were unaware of the situation.
"The car was good (in the race). I started second and just followed Max Gresham for the first 25 laps or so. After a caution period, I missed a shift and we slipped back to fifth. I ended up getting really tired at the end of the race, but it was a good night for us to finish as strong as we did.”
Stamina is something that will come over time for the Legends grad as Hill is only used to running 20 to 30 laps at a time. Now, with his first event in the rear-view mirror, he is ready to jump back in his Late Model for his next race at Watermelon Capital Speedway (GA) on Saturday, May 9th.
“We need to be running the Late Model a lot more, but my dad said the more seat time I get in a car the better, so I will still race my Legends Car as well. We were really proud of what we did tonight and we are looking forward to the next race.”
Austin Hill, in his Legends Car, and his brother Dalton, in his Bandolero, will be racing on May 8th at the Atlanta Motor Speedway (GA), prior to Austin's second Late Model event at Watermelon Capital Speedway.
