Lanier National Speedway (GA) is a place that Austin and Dalton Hill know quite well. Racing at the track multiple times throughout the season, both drivers have driven into victory lane, so they know how to get it done on race day.
On Saturday at Lanier, both Hill Brothers were in action at the track with Austin racing his Late Model in the James Garrison Memorial 100, while Dalton raced in the Bandolero Bandits division feature. Austin was able to survive a trip into the wall during his feature to finish seventh while Dalton was spun out on the last lap, but still managed to finish fourth in his event.
Austin Hill’s trouble started in qualifying, where he missed his entry and exit points on the throttle. In the race, contact with another driver forced him to pedal a car with malfunctioning brakes to the finish.
“In qualifying, we had a really good car,” said Austin. “I think I gave up a little bit in turns three and four. I don’t think I drove it in hard enough and get on the gas early enough. We ended up qualifying fifth.
“On the green flag, the guy that was outside of me edged me a bit on the start, right before a caution came out. I ended up choosing the outside on the next restart and was riding in fifth. Later, on another restart I got to the outside of Chase Elliott, and we touched, putting me in the wall a little bit. That messed up the car a little bit. When we had the last restart, I didn’t have any brakes going into turn one due to the fluid leaking after my trip into the wall. I just had to hold on and run the high lane.
“It was a good run. I think we had at least a second-place car, but it just didn’t turn out to be that way.”
In Dalton’s Bandolero feature, he also had trouble before the feature event and his day ended with him spun out on the track.
“I started eighth,” said Dalton. “The car was a little slow in the heat race. We went green (in the feature) and my car didn’t really go, so I had to catch up with the pack. I battled with another driver, then coming to the white flag, he drove in the corner on the apron and came up and spun me out.”
The Hill Brothers Racing team will take a weekend off from the track, but will return in action on Saturday, September 26th at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC), where Austin Hill will race his Late Model in the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour feature.
